Poetry on the sofa

poetry books on the sofaWhy a sofa?

I was sitting in on a conversation about poetry and why it seems to stay out of the pop culture mainstream, and it made me think about television, which is right in the middle of popular culture. Television comes to you in your home. You can relax on the davenport. No going out in the rain. No parking issues. Could poetry do that, too?

I decided that instead of waiting for the long cycles of submission and rejection to maybe resolve into publication, I’d create my own reality—my own space, a place where people could relax and read some of my work. A virtual sofa.

I’ll still send some work out and try to get some of my manuscripts published—but in the meantime, I welcome you to the sofa.

I really like this idea, Joannie. I’ve done something similar–Radically Accessible Poetry. The idea of simply putting poems I like online (others’ work, mostly) has elicited some very positive response from non-poets who thought they didn’t like poetry.

Thanks, Meryl. I’ll look around your Dactyls & Drakes site.

(I keep thinking I should add some newer poems to the sofa. Things to do…)

Do you know that once you click into a set of poems (Travel, Dance, etc.) the links on the right don’t seem to work? Or at least they don’t on a Mac. I enjoy your work, which I just discovered, and will add your blog to my list of ones I read.

I didn’t know that–and I confess that I haven’t tested on a Mac. But I recently did some updating on the site, and it’s possible I broke something. Thanks for the heads-up!.

A coding issue. I think I’ve corrected and tested it now.

    Thanks again for the heads-up.
