Gratitude: Back to basics

Sending thoughts for warmth and safety to everyone living in Sandy’s path.

Today, I am thankful for my family, for our home, for some time to work on poems, and for the cat on my legs.

I wasn’t feeling very thankful yesterday, but the Sunday Gratitude Journal reminds me there’s always something. Then I remembered: health insurance!

Health insurance was immediately helpful when Tom had to go to the ER yesterday with a knee that was so swollen he couldn’t put weight on it. He still can’t put weight on it, but he has options and follow-up care. Note to the candidates: Everyone needs this.

Berries in the fermentation bin and the punch down toolAnd I’m glad that, with my health and my car running, I was able to drive down to the winery today and help out by doing a not-so-early morning punch down on the Petit Verdot. When you look at this photo, smell the grape-baking bread fermentation smell and hear the crackling sound of busy yeast.

I’m thankful for all the good poetry mojo during the month of October, and for the chance to join the staff at Cascadia Review next month.

Now, I need to stock up on candy for Wednesday.

Open the door. Open my heart.
